Of Transits to the Seventh House

12 10 2009

Ruling marriage and the husband or wife it is often overlooked that the seventh also signifies public enemies. When war breaks out between nations or between individuals, the seventh house signifies the people or countries that are “subhuman” and so opposite to yourself that they deserve to be slapped in the face at the least. The nature of the seventh house is that it is opposite, and alien to the person or country signified by the Ascendant, this is not to say that it is in any way “less than” the person or country signified by the Ascendant, in fact it indicates that there is a definite equality since the seventh and the first houses are exactly equal in size and in modality. If the enemy was not seen as either a threat or rival, because of possessing equal power to the person, then it wouldn´t be seen with the same intensity, it would be overlooked, and such enemies might then fall into the twelfth house, the house of the unacknowledged.

Having stated that the seventh primarily signifies enemies, it is then not a big leap of the imagination to state that the wife or husband must be synonymous with the public enemy. The marriage partner therefore becomes the party of opposition, it is not to say that there cannot be love between enemies, or understanding, just that to love someone in a romantic sense purely would put that person into the fifth house, which is the primary house for affairs and ego fulfilling love.

One of the great mistakes of the twentieth century, considering the nature of the seventh house, is that there ought to be romantic love and happiness in marriage, that the idea of marrying for love is the only reason why two people ought to marry. It´s the idea that your other half must in some quasi-religious sense be your “soul mate”, as well as lover and friend. It´s a catastrophic mix-up of the seventh with the fifth and eleventh houses, those are the houses of romance and friendship. The nature of the seventh house and as a result the nature of marriage, (or “partnership” for those too cowardly to commit) is one of pure opposition and friction. Enemies though, are not always at war, war is just an irresolvable disagreement, but just as with war the enemy´s regime can be changed through victory over them, but in essence the country will always be the same country.

Because the seventh house in a person´s chart never changes, the opposition and the marriage partner therefore will always be of the same nature and will always make the same confrontational demands, no matter how much that enemy is vanquished or swapped for a new one. The United States during its lifetime at its conception fought a powerful, totalitarian, militaristic empire, (Britain), who ironically became its strongest ally and supporter during the twentieth century, which right up until the 1960´s was still a totalitarian, apartheid supporting, Empire, Britain was by no means a Democracy with an Empire, it was an Empire with representation as per the Magna Carta in order to please the landed elites and no-one else. The United States natal chart of Philadelphia 4th July 1776 has a full seventh house with Mercury as seventh ruler in great debility, it perhaps signifies that all who are true opposition are likely to be “defeated” not because they are weaker, but simply because they are likely to make the wrong moves, or be defeated by other (8th house) forces. The Soviet Union was no weak enemy, nor was Nazi Germany, despite being a country a fraction the size of the US, and the reason is that Mars in the seventh is the most accidentally dignified planet in the chart, in the seventh house, also in its own terms. These rivals have always had powerful armies, and military objectives based on misguided ideals, hence the Neptune square, they have been at least as technologically advanced as the US, with Uranus on the Descendant, and with Venus and Jupiter they have always had plenty of resources, and popularity. In the future, as in the past, all nations of enemies that America picks on will always possess the same qualities, whether they do at the beginning or not is irrelevant, because America´s chart will ensure that this will always be the case.

Enemies and Allies of America

  1. The British Empire: Militaristic mad men with mistaken ideals (Imperialistic oppressors)
  2. The Confederacy: Militaristic mad men with mistaken ideals (slavery for goodness sake)
  3. The II Reich: Militaristic mad men (people who march around with a spike on their helmet)
  4. The III Reich: Militaristic (followers of a mad man)
  5. Japanese 1941 (Imperialistic oppressors, with suicidal pilots…Neptune-Mars)
  6. Soviet Union: Militaristic (ideal was to spread communism… very mistaken)
  7. Vietnam: (An elusive enemy that was never truly defeated… Neptune-Mars)
  8. Iraq: Militaristic (led by a lunatic…Uranus, possessors of WMD which was never found…Mars-Neptune)
  9. Osama and co: These people are now the enemy and use violence for mistaken ideals (Mars-Neptune once again)
  10. The British and French Empires as well as the Russian Empire are allies (though possess the same qualities as the enemy.)

As with nations, so with individuals

Natal planets placed in the seventh or ruling the seventh will act like permanent opposition, this is the husband or wife that will be present in the native´s life no matter how many times they get married, no matter how many times they get in fights, their opposite number will always be of the nature of what is in the seventh, or what rules it. The idea that you can find the perfect partner is not accurate, in the sense that they will make you happy; so much as you will always find the perfect partner that fits perfectly with the nature of your seventh house, whether you want them or don´t.

As planets transit the seventh house, people can appear who are of the nature of those planets, this is obvious. What´s interesting though is the interplay between those transiting planets and planets natally placed in the first house. Clearly the transits to the houses do not last very long, though the outer planets can remain in a house for a number of years, and so people who you meet may come and go, just like the transits, friends will arrive, and friends will disappear.

How to find the “perfect wife” (or husband)

If the Descendant is afflicted, this is to say, if the seventh house ruler is in hard aspect and in most cases if planets in Libra are afflicted too, there will be trouble in marriage, the person will always find someone of the nature of that planet in their life. A planet in fall in the seventh house in good aspect will signify someone that is not as strong or assertive, a person that in some sense is weak, or unhappy, but in positive aspect they are likely to get along with you and be helpful, this is the same for the ruler of the Descendant. It is possible to find the perfect person, you have to refine your search. The point is to look at the chart, and decide what qualities are part of the descendant. If it´s Mars in the seventh house square to any other planet, then an independent, selfish argumentative person is what you need to look for, this will fulfil what the seventh house says you ought to have, obviously the trick, as with the chart of America with the British Empire is to convert that enemy into an ally, so that you fight together against the bogymen instead of against each other.

If your Descendant ruler is Jupiter in Sagittarius in the third house semi-square Pluto, then what you want in someone is an optimistic, religious, foreign person who probably teaches in a primary school, someone that is not weak, and has a strong sense of morals. The Pluto effect will mean that she is likely to be mildly obsessive, and paranoid, she might be a little possessive if not controlling. But the trick is to accept that this is the type of person that you are meant to have, once that´s acknowledged then there is no need to be enemies.

If the Descendant ruler is Mars in Capricorn square Moon, and the Moon is in hard aspect in the seventh house, then the person that is needed will look like Mars, independent, assertive, outgoing but will inevitably be very sensitive and emotional, once their true nature is known. This is no-one’s fault but the person who owns the chart finding the “perfect” person to complement them. The perfect person however, is simply not some film-star, but a real human being who is likely to be not much more than the equal and opposite of the person themself.

Saturn in Capricorn

28 12 2008

Saturn is said to be strongest in Capricorn its night time rulership which is interesting since in Aquarius he possesses both rulership plus triplicity and terms. But in reality the essential dignity is borne of more than just simple elemental dignities, in fact the sign of Capricorn and the planet Saturn share rulership over a large number of things, which Aquarius and Libra (Saturn´s day rulership and exaltation) do not. In the same way that Venus and Libra are not analogous, because Venus rules over Taurus too, Saturn and Capricorn are not analogous.

Some things that both Saturn and Capricorn both have affinity with are: age, experience, ambition, skin, bones and buildings, especially those that are built to last. Government buildings and buildings that have an aura of respect and hushed quiet to them are also both Capricorn and Saturn´s pride and joy.

The truth of the matter is that in Capricorn Saturn is lord of his own duties and thus takes orders from no other planet. And so this is the reason for his pure expression in this sign. In Capricorn, Saturn is called upon to express all of the greatest qualities of that sign. This is the sign that rules engineering, civil service, government, clock makers, mountain climbers, and real estate dealers. It is interesting that in Capricorn the desire for power is not in service of ego in any way, the ambition seems to be borne out of a desire not so much for admiration but out of a basic insecurity and fear of not being good enough or not having enough.

It is interesting to note that Saturn often signifies a lack of, either through poverty, disease or another reason for unhappiness as a traditional malefic.  But Capricorn does not signify the same, Capricorn is not a “malefic” sign, it is simply a Cardinal Earth sign which is practical, organised and rather reliable. The likelihood is that in Capricorn, Saturn will have to be tested for all it is worth. But the elemental nature is beneficial here, the organisational ability of Saturn here, his cool headed ability to think responsibly and be self reliant is extremely beneficial.

In  some ways here, Capricorn forces Saturn into building things that are of the greatest quality and standard, and since Saturn is concerned with defense, with organisation and with traditions, Capricorn ensures that whatever it is that Saturn turns his attention to, that his projects are completed with the minimum of fuss but with the maximum amount of quality and detail. Saturn misses nothing and is also smart in what it does. In Capricorn Saturn is fond of building walls, walls which are not necessarily meant to withstand an attack, but walls which are built in order to inspire respect, awe and to make it clear that order will be kept and barriers will also be kept. One modern example of this was the Berlin Wall which began construction under a Jupiter Saturn conjunction in Capricorn. It kept out the East Germans, but also became a highly political symbol that no-one is to fall out of line, that people must stay in their place and not deviate from it.

The early 1930´s were a time in which Saturn was in Topical Capricorn. Of course these were the worst years of the Great Depression. Obviously they were extremely tough times, but it is during such times that things which are not of real value, things which are constructed on sand collapse while what is constructed on solid rock remains untouched by the calamity surrounding it. The same parable might be applied to the collapse of Communism in Western Asia and Eastern Europe during another transit of Saturn in Capricorn.

Capricorn doesn´t have time for things that are not of service, that are superficial, and that don´t have a moral fabric based on respect. It is no wonder then that Saturn in Capricorn simply wants to create things that are of quality and last a long time, that, like bones will actually outlive him. Saturn is really very simple under the beam of Capricorn, his focus is strong and he repeats what he does until it is so perfect that he is able to make it look a lot harder than it really is. The idea here is an incredible feat based on the simplest of structures. This is part of the beauty of majestic Capricorn, like the Great Pyramids.

An interesting thing about Saturn here is that despite the natural affinity with Earth, this position is one which looks very much skywards. As a result then Saturn here often ends up in very high places, skyscrapers, mountains, and even in space fit the bill for this placement. Capricorn forces Saturn here into climbing, and it seems that the steeper the climb, the more this Saturn enjoys it.

Saturn in Libra,

19 12 2008

“Marriage is not to us a Sacrament, but, upon the other hand, the love of a man and woman, and the inseparable physical desire, are sacred. This conviction has come to us through ancient philosophy and modern literature, and it seems to us a most sacrilegious thing to persuade two people who hate each other…to live together, and it is to us no remedy to permit them to part if neither can re-marry.” W.B. Yeats

Libra is Saturn´s sign of exaltation. Saturn is also said to have both terms, face and triplicity in various degrees of this sign. So in Libra it is possible for Saturn to actually hold as much essential dignity as in his signs of rulership Capricorn and Aquarius. In Libra then, Saturn is at home, he is not given the authority or responsibility that is given in his own signs, but he is given all of the fine things, ease and happiness that it is possible for that benific Venus to give.

Libra has rulership over bedrooms, boudoirs, boutiques, beauty parlours, closets, florists and private chambers. But in truth these places are all derived from the balanced, airy and cool, yet pleasant time of year which marks tropical Libra. The sign is one of plenty, and this is so because of the hard work of Virgo in the previous month. After the harvest there is a clean and pure air which is distinct from summer´s heat and dryness. But in fact Saturn here is given by Venus a time of ease and relaxation, he is given time in which to share the resources reaped over the year, to trade and barter with them, but also to give in order to gain alliances, friends, and of course what Libra primarily cares for: marriage and relationships.

Saturn in Libra is in easy pleasurable terrain; namely a matrimonial bed with soft clean sheets, with pictures on the wall, nice food on the table, and the company with which to share it; all the things that make life beautiful and easier to live. And Saturn being Saturn has knowledge of the rest of the Zodiac and realises that this is one sign where his tired head has easy rest, has some of the best. Now of course having possession of nice things on their own is fairly pointless, which is why Saturn needs people to share them in this sign. A picture might be beautiful, and so might a bed be soft, but it is so much better for Saturn to have someone else to acknowledge it and to share in it. But of course this idea can work in the exact opposite direction; namely that the ease for Saturn here is derived from having Libran companionship and support, that the beauty which is created and supported becomes possible only through undying devotion of a Libran Venus lover to her Saturn partner.

It is true that Saturn is fortunate in this placement. The inheritance is to be born with solid parental relationships and forefathers who were civilised and cultivated. Through these partnerships which came before Saturn has learnt to become expert in relating and in diplomacy. The truth is that Venus forces Saturn here into remembering people´s names, into remembering their likes and dislikes, so that over time, this Saturn learns how to serve others and to please others while serving himself.

Saturn´s nature is tireless. Saturn is constructive. Venus likes things that are beautiful and serve to make life happier for people. So in Libra Saturn is given tools that Venus approves of; sometimes these are artistic tools; instruments, paint, colour, and the product of which raises humanity out of filth and into civilisation, because these things are all designed to please others. But Saturn also has a great affinity with defenses, with building things in order to defend his tradition, family and culture. Saturn in this respect will erect buildings that are beautiful, that encourage others to feel both admiration and respect.

Saturn in Libra in some senses does not need to worry about defense that much. For in building palaces, gardens and planting trees, his ability to invite rivals, to entertain and to treat them is an easy path to gaining alliances, and to maintain peace. And in this peace Saturn is truly safe from any and all manner of dangers, he is able to live life without fear and to enjoy his many years with Venus always at his side.

Saturn in Scorpio

16 12 2008

While Mars and Pluto are in tropical Capricorn they are forced into hard labour because Capricorn tells them to work hard, to dig, to make solid walls and to use all experience and skill possible in order to win for Mars, and to transform and change for Pluto, Saturn when placed in their country is not so comfortable with his challenges. Capricorn is the place where Mars is exalted. Mars as a fighter and an aggressor is victorious through taking defensive measures. Mars builds walls, and wears thick body armour while under Capricorn´s leadership, it fights a land battle using the hardiest of terrain to its advantage whether this be hill fort or mountain.

Saturn when in tropical Scorpio faces similar challenges, but while Mars is content to fight defensive battles on behalf of Capricorn, Saturn when placed in Scorpio is peregrine, having only terms in the last three degrees. Saturn is forced by Scorpio into donning the mantle of war, which it dislikes, and fighting for its survival in some of the most inhospitable terrain. The nature of Scorpio is that of water and so Saturn is forced in Scorpio´s terrain into using and utilising water in order to construct its edifices.

Saturn is not a fiery hot tempered fighter like Mars, nor is he the mysterious invisible yet powerful figure that Pluto, or Hades represents though he does appreciate it when that power is beneficial to his undertakings. The trait of Saturn is to be still, it is to be still, to meditate, mediate and to take responsibility, he is in no way a fighter, but a decision maker. The nature of Scorpio is to kill, to destroy, to eliminate, but also to give renewal and life through its secret processes.

Old men do not fight wars, young men with their blood up and their ideals fired up fight wars. Old men pass laws and constitutions, not only constitutions, but they draw the blueprint for the institutions which are to be built and which will serve to protect them, their families and their traditions for generations to come. Old men care for their honour, for respect, for maintaining the respect of their children and their family name. And so under the beam of Scorpio the old man must regenerate his burnt down and destroyed tradition, his church, his town hall, his heritage.

In one way Saturn´s opportunity in Scorpio is to have a say in making a brand new city plan, in making a new name for a family which was wiped out by natural disaster or by plague, or by the afflictions and mortifications which the tropical sign of Scorpio has a freedom to bring. Saturn has age, has wisdom and wishes to meditate and to take pride in the achievements and the name that he has inherited or worked hard to raise, but Mars is the commander of Saturn in this placement, Mars clads Saturn in war armour, and thankfully Saturn does not have to fight during the day time Sun as in Mars´s  Aries daytime rulership, where he is in fall, but during Mars´s nightime rule where Saturn´s cold nature is more accommodated for.

The idea of Saturn fighting is a difficult one especially with his exaltation being in the peace making tropical Libra. Saturn in fact is not strong enough to fight, to kill and to maim as Mars and Pluto would so have it in Scorpio. Instead Saturn is seen to act defensively building not so much a wall, but a castle with a mote, with a water feature which is a barrier that is fixed and which is very difficult to destroy or remove.

In psychological terms of course the water is akin to creating an island, and so for any would be attacker the mote serves to destroy their emotional morale and forces them to give up on any form of attack barring a year long siege. Saturn in Scorpio is not destined to lose battles as it is destined to lose in Aries, where the walls are knocked down by firepower and overwhelming force. But one this is for sure in Scorpio the battles that Saturn does take up are the ones which are brought about because of the most abysmal abuse that is taken out against it.

The trouble for Saturn when travelling through the tough country of Scorpio is that it is hard to know where and when an attack is going to come, although it is fully aware that an attack is coming at some point.

It is said by modern astrology that this placement confers a strong desire nature, and this is true since it is Scorpio which creates desire and Martian qualities in Saturn rather than the idea of Saturn dampening and blocking Scorpio´s natural energy.

The attacks to which Saturn must defend against in Scorpio are vicious and are in pursual of Saturn´s total destruction and death. However Scorpio also gives Saturn power in this position. It is not the power which tired old Saturn is most happy with, but it is a power nonetheless which allows it to defeat any enemy, the power of Saturn here is both control over nuclear weapons, it is that psychological advantage of the mote, but also of resources which are unseen, and unknown even to Saturn until the moment of dire need. Another scenario for Saturn here is that of being overwhelmed by forces which create a dire emotional situation for which it is not prepared. This is the emotional shaking which leads to emotional self control, control of emotion, control of desire, control of Mars´s anger, lust, though of course “control” does not mean repression or negation, it means control, aqueducts control water to bring it and satisfy the city. Control here means that Saturn focuses the anger and lust of Mars polishing them and making them work better. A stone aqueduct of pure water as opposed to a dirty stream is one possibility.

Saturn is either too young, or too old for the experience of death, the fear of which is a potent and destructive force for Saturn´s inexperience. But destruction is definitely a part of Saturn´s experience here, it will be a destruction and a devastation that causes a great deal of anxiety and desolation. This destruction can take form usually in the guise of the previous generation wiping out resources, or of the previous generation dying or disappearing in order to bring about misery.

Saturn in essence does not want war, he does not want death either. Scorpio brings both of these. Saturn wants Sunday Roast with the family, turn up at church followed by whatever important and meaningful business which he carries out with respect through the rest of the week.

Composite and Synastry – Destined Relationships

25 09 2008

Soulmates?

I believe that these are probably the most quested for types of horoscopes which can be cast. To cast your own chart and to interpret it is one thing. If you know the time and believe it to be accurate, then all you have to do is to work it out and nod your head when you realise what you are, accept the faulty nature which is no fault of your own, and move on to trying to work with it.

But when there is someone that you know 100% that you love and that you are made for each other, it doesn’t really matter what interpretation you get, if it’s not the one that says you should stay together until the End of the Age, then it is obviously wrong. It is wrong, of course it’s wrong, how can some random Astrology tell you about how you feel about someone when it doesn’t even have feelings of its own.

There probably are some good relationships out there somewhere in the blue yonder, somewhere, there are people who find their happiness, all they do though is keep it secret. But it can happen and is destined to happen for those that believe in it, for those that seek and never give up hope.

Natal Chart vs. Synastry

Part of the parcel of course is that, written in every person in the Natal chart is a picture. This picture can say whether relations with other people, will be positive, or negative, whether they will encounter opposition, or whether they will encounter amiability. If the ruler of the natal 7th house is debilitated or weak, judge accordingly, all relations with regard to intimacy will involve a weak or debilitated person.

If the ruler of the Ascendant is joined happily with the ruler of the 7th, if the ruler of the 7th is placed in the 1st or the ruler of the 1st placed in the 7th, then the native will find contentment with a their significant other. These are the lectures of William Lilly. But this is a gross simplification. I use it simply to identify that some of the natural tendencies within an individual are already set, and that whatever synastry chart or composite chart they can find through someone else, that individual is set up for certain relationships from birth.

Instead of looking for certain things in a synastry or in a composite chart, you should look for the relationships which are destined in your natal chart. I don’t believe that it is necessary to have the same relationships throughout life, I don’t believe in the psychological model of the parental and familial relationships being repeated, at great cost and misery to any one particular person. Those individual relations are one-offs like every relation.  the point of them is to accept them, integrate them in your life, however distinct from what you crave and want, and then set out to find someone that is different, because life is about gathering up different experiences.

There may well be similarities between what you experienced as a child and what you experience as an adult with other adults. But it will not be the same, the same patterns do not have to be repeated. There is one house which signifies parents, one house which signifies siblings, one house that signifies extended family, and another entirely different house that signifies relationships.

I think that parallels are important in synastry and in a natal chart. The 7th house and its signifier must have some similarities with the overall nature of the person that you are interested in. They must in some way fulfil the destiny of that planet, of that house, and the aspects of that planet and its house.

MEANING

If you have ever read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley you will know that to have perfect and easy relationships and lives is to never learn anything and never acquire knowledge and human understanding. But that is not to say that in order to live a meaningful life you must suffer all the way through it. Just that you can only measure the successes and the happy times with the seemingly infinite times of failure, solitude and misery.

Some Pointers to Positive Synastry

There is no such thing as the perfect chart. But these things should be sought after rather than using aspects in order to reject someone. Compatibility is one thing, but there is also such a thing as having someone that is different to yourself and who can encourage you to experience different things.

Venus signifies love, and attraction, it is so obvious. Venus – Sun in aspect, this is the aspect that you should look for, all other aspects are just inferior.

The Descendant: The Descendant has as its natural ruler Venus, and is the traditional house of your intimate love. So what you need here is Venus – Descendant aspects, and by its very nature, Venus – Ascendant aspects, but especially Venus conjunct the Descendant.

Mars signifies sex, interestingly Mars is the natural ruler of the Ascendant and 1st house. Mars in harmonious aspect must be present to bring heat and warmth, its nature is of fire, this makes for passion.

Then Saturn, the other traditional malefic. Saturn allows things to last. A relationship is based on time spent together, and Saturn is Cronus. Saturn by its nature is in exaltation in the 7th sign Libra, the sign of the marriage and partnership. Saturn brings stability to people’s lives and permanence. Harmonious Saturn aspects are wanted.

Jupiter is important for Faithfulness. Jupiter in aspect will make things feel good.

Pluto. Pluto is about manipulation and attraction as well.

To be continued…
