South Node

The Dragon´s Tail Re-Written

Without wanting to change or re-write what is accepted knowledge. I´ll begin with what I am familiar which is Christian Astrology:

“Neither part of fortune, North node, South node do emit any radiation”

“North Node is as Jupiter, South Node is a Saturn and Mars” (p.533 CAIII)

This is interesting since the same result is given for for North and South:

“Moon with North Node or South Node shows active spirits, prompt to any science” (p.544)

About Mercury: “with North Node or South Node, he renders most acute and witty??? And good linguists speak many languages.” (p.545)

There are many instances in which South Node is described by Lilly as leading to illness, and misfortune through soldiers, thiefs and other nasty people. But here are a couple of quotes which give contrary evidence in Lilly.

Now my President, Prime Minister, Pop star and Film star:

In the light of Lilly we have South Node as a body without its own “radiation”, although he states that it is of the nature of Saturn and Mars. I find this very interesting. Brad Pitt has Mars conjunct SN in Capricorn. He is in films in which he is a fighter, and not just any old fighter, but a legendary fighter, one who is deified. Fight Club, Snatch, Troy, he´s Achilles. Mars for Pitt appears to be not just exalted but taken to the next level… invincibility, it is almost excessive in Fight Club where he takes absolute pleasure in destruction. Pitt´s Mars is 2 degrees orb conjunct SN. For closer Orb Zinedine Zidane has Mars conjunct SN in Cancer in the 3rd house. He is a great French footballer. Won the World Cup in 98, European Cup in Euro 2000, and Champions League in 2002 with Real Madrid. Here is the SN thing. He is down, for a notorious incident involving provocation from another player for which he reacted with violence. But then again, he´s been awarded the FIFA world player of the year no less than 3 times and awarded the World Cup golden ball in 2006.

So what we are beginning to see is not illness in Pitt´s case, but “great activity” which is quoting Lilly now. So using Lilly as a guide, we have South Node as a distinctly active, if not over-active area. Honour and success though is not denied. Disease and fraud which Lilly seems to point towards is not the mainstay here. But rather good health and extreme success when this person is successful. Churchill and Reagan I believe are leaders who are deified by large numbers of people in their countries, for standing up for “freedom”, which is your Jupiter signification. In Scorpio Reagan was a Hawk, an military supporter, though not a war mongerer. He is famed for expanding American economy. Which is your Jupiter signifier, though of course I am not denying that a price was paid at the same time. Churchill formed Alliances. SN Jupiter in Libra. He would have never won the war without the US on his side which is one thing that he achieved, through his North Atlantic Meetings with Roosevelt. And his talks with Stalin, and getting the rest of the Empire as well on his side, lets not forget the British Empire was not prepared to fight without that promise of Independence. Then we have Churchill the artist… he painted more than 700 watercolours.

I neglected Britney didn´t I? She´s your pin up pop-star. But she´s the most successful female singer to date. She has mutual reception by domicile between Venus and Capricorn, but I think that SN there is definitely bringing something extra, since Saturn and Venus are actually closely square to each other, and would lead me to an interpretation of someone more introverted and less confident about their abilities. With all planets below the horizon except for a 12th house Mars, Britney is not meant for the public exposure that she´s had. She has Fortune in the 10th which is a great position, but that´s it.

To just bring all this in now, here are only a handful of examples of South Node conjunctions. I do not refute Lilly´s observation that it is of a nature like Saturn and Mars. But I propose that this is a potentially highly active and expansive point. Like Saturn, because it is not a place of rest and relaxation, all my examples here are workaholics related to the planet in conjunction with the SN.

Fortuna: The Neglected Benific

20 12 2008

Most modern astrologers and students of Astrology read up the basic bullet points on the Part of Fortune check out its placement shrug their shoulders and then leave it, as if it was nothing more than a bit of garnish on their otherwise juicy main course. Of course this is a generalisation, but going on the general observation, it is noteworthy that not everyone understands or even cares for the Part of Fortune.

Fortuna is calculated by this little piece of arithmetic: Ascendant + Moon – Sun for daytime charts and; Ascendant + Sun -Moon for Night time charts. Most programs calculate it automatically anyway. So if it is so easy to find and know, why is it so neglected? The answer perhaps is that it has no sign association, rulership, no quality, element or nature, primarily because it is not a physical body. But the actual effects of Fortuna are real despite this.

Fortuna is in fact a Benific. Like Venus and Jupiter Fortuna is potentially where a pot of gold is hidden beneath the rainbow. Obviously pots of gold may be found literally if Fortune is in the 2nd house or 8th house. But the strongly positive nature of this lucky spot is similar to the point on a treasure map which is marked with an X. The idea of this magic and mystery is that in order to find that gold the native must at least have a little belief in the map and to follow it, just like Jupiter. For metaphorically Fortune is the point in the chart where the Sun, Moon and the Ascendant meet together and draw a mysterious yet absolutely compulsive “X” to mark the spot.

2nd house

The truth is that the Part of Fortune is as old as Astrology and has been in use since the ancients began calculating the Ascendant in charts. In delineating the 2nd house and the “riches” or “goods of fortune”, Lilly writes a checklist with the 2nd cusp at the top, followed by its lord followed by the Part of Fortune and its lord, followed by Jupiter, followed by planets “casually placed in the 2nd”. Fortuna actually has no association with the second house any more so than with any other house. But I find it enlightening that Lilly´s checklist for wealth places the Part over and above the importance of both Jupiter and other planets “casually placed in the second house”. This is not a horary chart that Lilly was examining but a chart of “nativity”. Fortune indeed in this respect seems to hold an even greater repute for being a benific and for bestowing that mystical pot of gold than Jupiter which is so obviously the “greater benific” and unmatched for greatness.

“When those that govern the Part of Fortune are very strong, they greatly increase the natives wealth, especially if assisted by the Sun or Moon.”(Lilly, William, Chritian Astrology, Part III)

Lilly is adamant about the Part of Fortune in relation to material wealth and to worldly success. And all of this still holds true, it is unchanged since the time of Ptolemy, the only thing that has changed really is the world view and what is considered as true fortune or wealth, since we live in an age in which spiritual wealth is acceptable, fortune may in fact bestow its wealth in hidden form just as well. But still, some things which have also changed to some degree is the malevolence associated with the 8th and 12th houses, so that Fortune in these houses may not be lost as such.

Bill Gates´s natal chart has 2nd ruler Sun placed in Scorpio in the 4th house. 4th house is obviously a positive and strong angular place for the 2nd house ruler, however, Gates did not inherit his wealth from his father, which would be the nature of a 4th house Scorpio Sun. The outstanding planets which are “casually placed in the 2nd” are obviously Jupiter and Pluto, but here again, these two planets are actually rulers of both the 5th, 6th and 9th houses. If we use Lilly´s guide though Fortuna is found in the 8th house in Aquarius, who dispositor Uranus is first house conjunct Ascendant, and strongly aspected by Sun in a Square. Now it would be possible to ignore this placement, but it is extremely fitting that someone whose wealth is more or less based on a corporation (8th house) selling software (ruled by Aquarius) should have his “fortune” borne out of such a placement. It should be noted that Fortune is in fact in a close T-Square with both its traditional dispositor Saturn and with Jupiter and Pluto in the second. It is not there for no reason.

Another brilliant example is Albert Einstein who had the conjunction with both an Aries Mercury and Saturn. His mind provided him his eventual fame and fortune. This is perhaps a stark example of Fortune working on the mutual reception with Mars and Saturn by domicile between the 8th cusp and the 10th house. Mars and Saturn both having rulership of physical matter and of movement Fortuna had worked magic into that mercury induced mental and intellectual achievement. For Einstein Jupiter was not the most dignified planet by far, being firstly peregrine, secondly cadent and thirdly in hard aspect with Pluto and Uranus, though this is not to say that originality did not spark from this placement, nor an understanding of the universe. Venus the other benific is equally detrimented and poorly aspected. So the Part of Fortune plays its unbelievable part.

The Part of Fortune is a hugely neglected placement in the search for the benefits which are possible to be found in the natal chart and elsewhere. It appears in the light of traditional analysis to be more important than Jupiter in terms of the “riches” and “goods of fortune” which don´t necessarily mean bank account, as in the case of Albert Einstein. Though as in the case of Bill Gates it obviously has some influence. So in the light of this, Fortuna when disposited well, when supported by Sun or Moon, and when searched for, will reveal to its quester all the luck and spectacular fame and fortune that Jupiter the primarily spiritual planet, and Venus the traditional love planet left out of the bargain. The fortune that is not love and the fortune that is not God, is to be found here.

Composite and Synastry – Destined Relationships

25 09 2008

I believe that these are probably the most quested for types of horoscopes which can be cast. To cast your own chart and to interpret it is one thing. If you know the time and believe it to be accurate, then all you have to do is to work it out and nod your head when you realise what you are, accept the faulty nature which is no fault of your own, and move on to trying to work with it.

But when there is someone that you know 100% that you love and that you are made for each other, it doesn’t really matter what interpretation you get, if it’s not the one that says you should stay together until the End of the Age, then it is obviously wrong. It is wrong, of course it’s wrong, how can some random Astrology tell you about how you feel about someone when it doesn’t even have feelings of its own.

There probably are some good relationships out there somewhere in the blue yonder, somewhere, there are people who find their happiness, all they do though is keep it secret. But it can happen and is destined to happen for those that believe in it, for those that seek and never give up hope.

Natal Chart vs. Synastry

Part of the parcel of course is that, written in every person in the Natal chart is a picture. This picture can say whether relations with other people, will be positive, or negative, whether they will encounter opposition, or whether they will encounter amiability. If the ruler of the natal 7th house is debilitated or weak, judge accordingly, all relations with regard to intimacy will involve a weak or debilitated person.

If the ruler of the Ascendant is joined happily with the ruler of the 7th, if the ruler of the 7th is placed in the 1st or the ruler of the 1st placed in the 7th, then the native will find contentment with a their significant other. These are the lectures of William Lilly. But this is a gross simplification. I use it simply to identify that some of the natural tendencies within an individual are already set, and that whatever synastry chart or composite chart they can find through someone else, that individual is set up for certain relationships from birth.

Instead of looking for certain things in a synastry or in a composite chart, you should look for the relationships which are destined in your natal chart. I don’t believe that it is necessary to have the same relationships throughout life, I don’t believe in the psychological model of the parental and familial relationships being repeated, at great cost and misery to any one particular person. Those individual relations are one-offs like every relation.  the point of them is to accept them, integrate them in your life, however distinct from what you crave and want, and then set out to find someone that is different, because life is about gathering up different experiences.

There may well be similarities between what you experienced as a child and what you experience as an adult with other adults. But it will not be the same, the same patterns do not have to be repeated. There is one house which signifies parents, one house which signifies siblings, one house that signifies extended family, and another entirely different house that signifies relationships.

I think that parallels are important in synastry and in a natal chart. The 7th house and its signifier must have some similarities with the overall nature of the person that you are interested in. They must in some way fulfil the destiny of that planet, of that house, and the aspects of that planet and its house.

If you have ever read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley you will know that to have perfect and easy relationships and lives is to never learn anything and never acquire knowledge and human understanding. But that is not to say that in order to live a meaningful life you must suffer all the way through it. Just that you can only measure the successes and the happy times with the seemingly infinite times of failure, solitude and misery.

Some Pointers to Positive Synastry

There is no such thing as the perfect chart. But these things should be sought after rather than using aspects in order to reject someone. Compatibility is one thing, but there is also such a thing as having someone that is different to yourself and who can encourage you to experience different things.

Venus signifies love, and attraction, it is so obvious. Venus – Sun in aspect, this is the aspect that you should look for, all other aspects are just inferior.

The Descendant: The Descendant has as its natural ruler Venus, and is the traditional house of your intimate love. So what you need here is Venus – Descendant aspects, and by its very nature, Venus – Ascendant aspects, but especially Venus conjunct the Descendant.

Mars signifies sex, interestingly Mars is the natural ruler of the Ascendant and 1st house. Mars in harmonious aspect must be present to bring heat and warmth, its nature is of fire, this makes for passion.

Then Saturn, the other traditional malefic. Saturn allows things to last. A relationship is based on time spent together, and Saturn is Cronus. Saturn by its nature is in exaltation in the 7th sign Libra, the sign of the marriage and partnership. Saturn brings stability to people’s lives and permanence. Harmonious Saturn aspects are wanted.

Jupiter is important for Faithfulness. Jupiter in aspect will make things feel good.

Pluto. Pluto is about manipulation and attraction as well.
